Training
Training - Overview
My role in overseeing training is critical to ensuring that our methods align with the club’s long-term goals and high-performance standards. I focus on developing a well-rounded approach that balances individual player needs with the overall squad’s objectives.
This comprehensive oversight ensures that our training program supports both immediate performance and long-term development, creating a high-performance culture that aligns with the club’s broader vision.
This includes:
Methods of Training
Our training methods are built on modern football practices that emphasise technical, tactical, physical, and mental development. I work closely with the coaching staff to ensure that each session is appropriately challenging for the players. We utilise position-specific drills, small-sided games, and high-intensity tactical exercises to replicate match-day conditions and improve decision-making under pressure.
Examples of Training
For example, we might run high-pressing drills to help forwards develop their defensive work, possession-based games to enhance midfielders' control and vision, and focused defensive shape sessions for the backline. Each drill is tailored to individual roles within the team. For young players stepping up to the A-League team, training places emphasis on technical skills and tactical awareness, ensuring they can adapt to the demands of senior football.
Periodisation
I oversee the periodisation of training to manage player loads and ensure they peak at the right times during the season. We carefully balance training intensity with rest and recovery periods, structured in cycles that correspond to match demands. By aligning training loads with key fixtures, we ensure that players are physically prepared and mentally sharp, while reducing the risk of burnout and overtraining.
Return to Play
For injured players, I coordinate with the medical team to establish a comprehensive return-to-play plan. This process is individualised, beginning with rehabilitation exercises and gradually progressing to football-specific drills. The plan ensures players regain full match fitness without rushing the recovery, reducing the chance of re-injury.
Transition Work for Young Pros
Integrating young professionals into the A-League squad is a critical aspect of our development pathway. I help design sessions that ease their transition, gradually increasing their involvement in A-League training while ensuring they continue to progress in their own development plans. These sessions are a mix of tactical education, physical conditioning, and mentorship from experienced players, helping them adjust to the demands of professional football
Managing Senior Player Loads
For senior players, managing their workload is essential for sustaining performance throughout the season. I work with the coaching and sports science teams to implement tailored load management plans, which include lighter training sessions, recovery strategies, and structured rest. This ensures that our senior players remain fit, sharp, and ready to perform in crucial moments.
Player Involvement in Planning/Review
Engaging players in the planning and review process is key to their development and motivation. We regularly hold individual meetings with players to review their performances, set personal goals, and gather their feedback on the training process. This collaborative approach helps players take ownership of their development and fosters a continuous improvement mindset.
